This marks the end of privacy (the Sex
Inspectors or Supernanny Channel 4 for example) and also the erosion
or end of choices, personal reflectiveness and responsibility. In
many respects, it very much feels like self-health on Speed. There
may be many possibilities for the soaring number of these programs;
boredom, medium that has exhausted itself etc. but the process
remains, as Chomsky put it:
‘….people
would like to think that there is somebody up there who knows what
he’s doing. Since we don’t participate, we don’t control, we don’t
even think about questions of vital importance. We hope somebody is
paying attention who has some competence. Let’s hope the ship has a
captain….’ (Noam Chomsky- The Chomsky Reader).
As an Existential Psychotherapist, my
concern is to open the dialogue and facilitate a reflective space
for my clients. I adhere to allow them a place to think through by
being in therapy with me. Through this process, I am going through
some change. There are no certain set perceptions, predications or
outcomes that are aimed at. With all its complexities, this process
is open and facilitative one. Facilitative for the client’s needs at
a particular point in time and that may be different from one client
to the other. Clients may want to be able to take some stance or to
abandon it, to get lost or to find a way through the issues that
brought him/her to therapy and as I see it the list of possibilities
is as long as human ones.
