A Design for Life – Noam Israeli
Recent media trends made me reflect on
the direction of contemporary existence and the possible impact it
has on our profession. The ‘smart’ consumerism has been replaced
with the ‘right’, designed one. There are programs on the TV that I
am sure are followed by workshop, weekend training etc. on all
aspects of daily living. The data is not only on the ‘what’ to do
but also and possibly moreover on ‘how’.
The spectrum of programs covers the right way of: cooking; property-
moving up and down in property ladder, refurbishment; children-
conceiving them, raising them, enhance their academic performance;
feeding them, disciplining them; sex life; health; fitness; diet;
wear; cleaning; pets- their keeping and discipline; cars;
relationships-maintenance and repair; how to be an artist, a
performer, a singer, an actor, a celebrity, a dancer, an ice skater,
an entrepreneur, an ambassador, survival skills on remote parts of
the earth and I am sure I missed some that the reader could fill in.
I will not discuss the dubious
credibility of many of the ‘experts’ who are hosting these shows, as
much as it concerns me. My concern is with the process of their
existence. These shows and possibly what follows them in form of
seminars, weekend trainings present a certain way of living that
should be adhered to. Their popularity may indicate the need of the
viewers for ‘a right way’ of going about any of these topics.
Viewers encouraged taking on board parts or all that is presented:
techniques, methods and conclusions.
